Restoring Clean Coastlines: One Love Salone Foundation Concludes Beach Cleaning Exercise in Freetown

In line with our mission to promote environmental stewardship and community-driven development, One Love Salone Foundation proudly launched a beach cleaning exercise along Sierra Leone’s coastline. This initiative is more than a clean-up, it’s a call to action, a symbol of civic pride, and a demonstration of our collective responsibility to protect the natural beauty that defines our nation.

“Cleaning the beach is not just an act of service, it’s an act of love for our land and our people.” One Love Salone Foundation

On Sunday, May 25, 2025, the One Love Salone Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, organized a massive beach cleaning exercise along Lumley Beach in Freetown. This initiative was part of the foundation’s commitment to national development and community involvement.

The beach cleaning exercise saw enthusiastic participation from students who are beneficiaries of the foundation’s fully funded scholarship scheme. Knowing to the fact that the beaches are not only vital ecosystems, they are cultural landmarks, economic lifelines, and recreational spaces for thousands of Sierra Leoneans.

Even though there are social needs on the use of the beaches, they face growing threats from pollution, neglect, and unsustainable practices. Through this exercise, we aim to restore these spaces to their natural glory, raise awareness about environmental sustainability, and empower local communities to take ownership of their surroundings.

By voluntarily mobilizing students who are our beneficiaries and facilitating the cleaning exercise, the beach cleaning campaign reflects our belief that change begins at the grassroots. It’s a hands-on effort to inspire cleaner habits, foster eco-tourism, and ensure that future generations inherit a coastline they can be proud of.

“When we clean Lumley Beach, we’re not just protecting nature we’re protecting our future.”

Lumley Beach is one of Sierra Leone’s most cherished coastal gems as a vibrant stretch of sand that welcomes families, tourists, vendors, and ocean lovers alike. But behind its beauty lies a growing challenge and pollution threatens its ecosystem, its appeal, and its future. In response, we launched a dedicated beach cleaning exercise to restore Lumley Beach’s natural charm and reinforce the importance of environmental stewardship.

As part of our broader mission to promote ecotourism, civic pride, and sustainable development, this beach cleaning campaign sends a clear message that Sierra Leone’s coastline is worth protecting. Together, we can ensure that Lumley Beach remains a source of joy, livelihood, and national pride for generations to come.

Through this initiative, One Love Salone Foundation has not only cleared waste from one of Sierra Leone’s most iconic beaches but also planted seeds of environmental awareness, civic pride, and collective responsibility.

This is more than a one-day event. It’s a movement toward sustainable habits, cleaner coastlines, and a deeper respect for the natural beauty that surrounds us. By engaging students, we have shown that every hand matters and every action counts.

As we leave Lumley Beach cleaner than we found it, we carry forward a message that protecting our environment is not a seasonal task, it’s a daily commitment. One Love Salone Foundation remains dedicated to this mission, and we invite all Sierra Leoneans to join us in keeping our shores clean, our communities healthy, and our nation proud. Because when we care for our coastline, we care for our future.

The event received praise from students and beach attendants alike, who commended the Foundation’s timely initiative and its contribution to Sierra Leone’s developmental growth. The exercise not only showcased the importance of community involvement but also highlighted the value of collective responsibility towards national development initiatives.

The One Love Salone Foundation’s special focus is on complementing the government’s efforts in the education sector by providing fully funded scholarships to students across the country. The foundation’s criteria for support include: Outstanding Academic Achievement, Leadership Skills, and Community Involvement.

The foundation aims to mentor and empower citizens to support and contribute to society and humanity. With this beach cleaning exercise, the Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to community development and volunteerism. The foundation plans to extend similar community involvement programs to students and beneficiaries outside Freetown.

This is just the beginning. One Love Salone Foundation is committed to long-term environmental stewardship, and Lumley Beach is our starting point. Together, we’re building a culture of care where clean beaches reflect clean values. One Love Salone Foundation
